Amazon’s Prime Video this week (May 26-June 1, 2024) plans to add 113 new TV shows and movies to its Prime membership lineup. Here’s the three best, in my humble opinion:

Platoon (1986)
Director Oliver Stone’s 1986 Vietnam drama stars Charlie Sheen as a grunt in the brush who’s torn between two sergeants (Tom Berenger and Willem Dafoe) who have violently different views of how to conduct the war. This is Stone’s masterpiece, perhaps even surpassing 1991’s JFK, in large part because it feels so authentic thanks to the director’s personal experience in the war. Sheen is particularly good and a rewatching of this film and 1987’s Wall Street will make you wonder why he didn’t become a top-tier actor instead of a late-night punchline. Debuts June 1.

Blow Out (1981)
This haunting Brian DePalma-directed drama stars John Travolta as an accidental investigator of a presidential assassination with DePalma’s then wife, Nancy Allen, playing a clueless accessory. This is arguably DePalma’s finest work as he taps into the conspiratorial vibe that still haunted the nation in the early 80s after the political assassinations of the 1960s and the Watergate/intelligence scandals of the 1970s. Travolta is also sensational as the B movie soundman who’s seen and heard enough. Debuts June 1.

No Country for Old Men (2007)
The Coen Brothers’ flawless neo-western stars Josh Brolin as a good old boy who stumbles upon a jackpot of money but is then pursued by a ruthless, coin-flipping killer, played deliciously by Javier Bardem. (And let’s not overlook the commanding performance of Tommy Lee Jones as the weather-beaten sheriff.) Joel and Ethan Coen have conspired to make cinema brilliance over the years with films such as Raising Arizona, Fargo, The Big Lebowski, and Miller’s Crossing. But there may be no better Coen Brothers film than No Country for Old Men. If you haven’t seen it, start streaming. Debuts June 1.
