Q. I know awhile back that you wrote about Redbox renting 4K movies in some cities. Are they still doing that? And if so, which cities are they available? I have a 4K TV and 4K Blu-ray player and it would be great to rent the movies instead of having to pay so much for them from Amazon and Best Buy. — Anthony, Dallas.

Anthony, you’re right. Redbox, the kiosk rental service, last spring began renting four 4K Blu-ray discs in six markets. The trial markets were New York, Los Angeles, Seattle, Detroit, Austin and Miami. And the four 4K discs were Black Panther, The Matrix, The Martian and The Commuter.

But Redbox today has announced that the 4K trial has been expanded to 15 markets. The nine new markets are:

Colorado Springs, Colo.
Des Moines, Iowa
Kansas City, Mo.
Minneapolis, Minn.
Portland, Ore.
Reno, Nev.
San Diego, Calif.
San Francisco, Calif.
Spokane, Wash.

Sorry to say that Dallas is not on the list, but Redbox said more markets are coming soon.

The rental service said 4K titles now available in the 15 trial markets include Creed II and A Star is Born. Future 4K releases will include Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald on March 12; Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse on March 19 and Aquaman on March 26.

Redbox said the price for the 4K discs is $2.50 per night, which is 75 cents more than a DVD nightly rental and 50 cents more than a regular Blu-ray nightly rental.

However, for many 4K TV owners, a slightly higher nightly fee is a small price to pay for the improvement in picture. There are few places to rent 4K Blu-rays now so Redbox can get away with charging a premium price.

Anthony, we will keep reporting on new developments here, particularly your interest for 4K rentals in Dallas. Until then, happy viewing!
