NBC has announced it will cancel the sitcom, The Carmichael Show, after three seasons and 32 episodes. The series finale will air in August.
The show starred comedian Jerrod Carmichael and his fictional family featuring David Alan Grier (Living Color) as his father.

The Carmichael Show, which often tackled controversial current topics such as mass shootings and sexual politics, received generally strong reviews from the critics. RottenTomatoes.com, which tracks critical reviews, gave season three a score of 88 percent out of a possible 100 with seven of eight critics surveyed saying they liked the show.
“Few sitcoms are built to handle the kind of provocative content that The Carmichael Show embraces as its reason for being… Carmichael not only keeps the jokes flying the whole time, but makes them better when it’s at its most Very Special,” wrote Alan Sepinwall at Uproxx.com.
But The Carmichael Show was never a ratings hit, often capturing fewer than five million viewers per live episode. In addition, the show was owned by 20th Century Fox Television, not NBC, which could have influenced the network’s decision to cancel the sitcom after season three.

The season three (and now series) finale is scheduled to air on August 9.
