WGN America Cancels Underground

WGN America has canceled the Civil War drama, Underground, after two seasons and 20 episodes.

The show chronicled the courageous escape of African-American slaves from their white owners during the war, using a network of people and methods known as the Underground Railroad.

Underground captured four NAACP Image Awards, including one for outstanding actress in a drama series for Jurnee Smollett-Bell who played a young slave on a plantation in Macon, Georgia.

And RottenTomatoes.com, which tracks critical reviews, gave season one a score of 93 out of a possible 100 while season two received a perfect 100.

But the show never reached a wide audience with some live episodes watched by fewer than 400,000 people. The now series finale, which aired three weeks ago, netted fewer than 500,000 viewers.
