The show starred Felicity Huffman, Timothy Hutton, Regina King (Emmy winner for her role), and Penelope Ann Miller (among others) as average Americans who try to cope with the aftermath of a serious allegation of a crime.

American Crime was a hit with the critics (and award shows) with RottenTomatoes.com giving the show a score of 97 out of a possible 100. (Season three netted a score of 100.)

“This anthology series may be the best dramatic show on broadcast television these days, daring as it does to work with both nuance and timely topicality,” wrote Tom Long of the Detroit News.

But the ratings were another story. The season one debut captured nearly nine million viewers, but the now series finale, which aired April 20, 2017, was seen by slightly more than two million.

Despite the sagging ratings, however, it’s likely the critics will weigh in that ABC’s decision to cancel American Crime is a crime itself.
