The show starred Martha Plimpton as the head of a Chicago Catholic family whose pious existence is slowly eroded by a series of personal revelations.

Despite what may sound like a less-than-humorous premise, RottenTomatoes.com gave the show a score of 67 out of a possible 100. Eighteen of 27 critics in the site’s survey liked The Real O’Neals.

“Like The Middle or The Goldbergs, the show is a sunny, single-camera comedy with occasional flights of fancy, but like Black-ish, it’s not afraid to go after tougher issues in a funny way,” wrote David Sims of The Atlantic.

But the ratings fell sharply over the two seasons with the season one debut capturing more than six million, but the now series finale generating fewer than three million.

The finale episode aired March 14, 2017.
