Q.  I’ve downloaded a bunch of children’s shows on my Kindle Fire tablet but sometimes they won’t play when we’re in the car, away from our wireless network. How come? I bought them; they should play with or without wireless, right? — Elizabeth, Newark, New Jersey.

Elizabeth, you are right. They should play, but there are reports that sometimes a downloaded video from Amazon will not play on the Kindle Fire HD when you are not connected to a wireless service. A message will pop up that says, “This video cannot be played at this time. Please try again.”

Problem is, if you try again, the odds are that it will still won’t play.

As best as I can tell, this problem doesn’t happen often. But if it does, there are a few things you can do.

One, re-set your Kindle by pressing and holding the Power button for 20 seconds. Your Kindle will shut down. Then after 20 seconds, release the Power button. Then, press the Power button and your Kindle Fire HD will re-start. According to Kindle owners on Amazon message boards, this will often re-set the downloaded videos so they will play without wireless.

But if it doesn’t work, there’s another option. Turn your Kindle Fire HD on while you’re in a wireless network. Make sure the Kindle is connected to the network and then call up the page of your downloaded video. There will be a ‘Download’ button on the right hand side of the page. Hit the ‘Download’ button and the video will re-download to your device, enabling you to watch it with or without a wireless connection.

The download takes about 20-30 seconds for a 30-minute program so it’s pretty harmless and easy to do and appears to be quite effective.

However, if this doesn’t work, contact Amazon. There might be a problem with your Kindle and you may need a replacement.

By the way, you can download a video from Amazon by purchasing it, or downloading it from Amazon Prime Video if you are a Amazon Prime subscriber.
